Can a locksmith unlock my Mercedes and make a key for it? It is a 1988 560SEC. I mailed the key
to a friend and it was lost in the mail. Thanks.

You can ask around at MBz Dealers or even key locksmiths. You will be looking for the key blanks so that the blank key can be cut to match your original key formula as designated by the VIN number.

    I highly doubt that the dealership or any locksmith is going to have your key code by VIN since its such an old car. That being said they would have to take a lock apart and decode the tumblers then cut a key by code from that decoding. It is not overly complicated so it should run you about $75 plus the cost of the keys, which the locksmith would have to try out on your vehicle to see if they fit the keyway.

    Best of luck and I hope you had insurance for mailing the key, you might be able to get compensated from the carrier.
