I think the best way to really learn the profession is to hire on at a locksmith company as an apprentice. Hands-on experience is the most valuable. Of course, there are classes you can take. Probably the most reputable is Associated Locksmiths of America (www.aloa.org) Although expensive, it is a good introduction and overview of the lock profession.

A really good suggestion is to hire on at a locksmith company, and see if they will pay (at least, partly) for you to attend this course. If you know up front all the details, your employer is more likely to take you seriously.

The more training and knowledge the better you'll do in this business. If you can open and rekey a house you'll do ok. If yo open and rekey an Acura you'll do better. If you can open and recombinate safes as well even better. And if you can do at least two out of three I'll hire you. Thanks, Scott

Yes, locksmiths can make a decent living. I would venture to say that the locksmiths mentioned in previous answers had years of experience and not just a certificate from a locksmith school. In my opinion it would be very difficult to graduate from that school and expect to jump right in an start operating a lucrative business. It may however help you get a job with a locksmith and you could advance from there.

Locksmiths have been around for thousands of years and will be around for a long time to come. You can earn a very good career at it and if you get in with a reputable hardware company and spend time there, yeas you can make up too 100 k a year. But if I were you I would look into electronic security. If you can install mag locks and security devices your future would really expand. The guys I know doing that make 200 k plus!

Yes. It is a service people always need, and if you offer 24 hour service, the pay is very good. There is lots of training and certification, try to do as much as possible to establish your credentials. I have a long-time friend who is 3rd generation locksmith and he can open any safe (he has never failed). He makes good money.

In a city or area the size of LA, I would say it certainly could be a very lucridtive occupation, especially if you have the money to advertise. A good sized yellow pages ad is a must, as well as ads in whatever local paper is the most widely read, restaraunts, bars, wherever there are place mats, there's a company selling ads on them. The first couple years could be tough, so don't quit your day job until you get established.

I recommend reading books, getting some practice locks and teaching yourself some basics. That is what I did. Learn to rekey a pin tumbler lock, learn to pick a pin tumbler lock, then you can go to a local locksmith an look for some shop work, that is where you will learn the most. Just my 2 cents. GOOD LUCK!
